What Is the Difference Between Red Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation) and an Infrared Sauna?

Photobiomodulation (PBM), or red light therapy, is still a relative novelty in Slovenia, even though it has been recognised and widely used abroad for many years. Its effectiveness is confirmed by more than 50,000 scientific studies, and it is used in private clinics, physiotherapy, cosmetic surgery, by holistic doctors, biohackers and even for home use.

People often mistakenly equate photobiomodulation with classic infrared (IR) saunas or the infrared lamps available in pharmacies and medical stores. Although both methods are based on the use of infrared light, they have different effects, wavelengths and ways of acting on the body.

Let's first look at the infrared sauna, which we already know well.

Infrared (IR) Sauna

Light spectrum: Mid (MIR) and far infrared (FIR) spectrum (3,000–100,000 nm)
Main effect: Deep heating of the body and detoxification

How does it work?

  • The heat of the far-infrared spectrum penetrates up to 4 cm deep into the tissues, causing intense sweating and accelerating the elimination of toxins.
  • It encourages muscle relaxation, stimulates blood circulation and speeds up metabolism.
  • It reduces stress by acting on the nervous system and promoting the release of endorphins (the happiness hormone).
  • It raises body temperature, which can strengthen the immune system and help fight infections.

Red Light Therapy (PBM / Photobiomodulation)

Light spectrum: Red (600–700 nm) and near-infrared (NIR) light (800–1100 nm)
Main effect: Cellular regeneration and biological stimulation — activating the cellular power plants, the mitochondria!

How does it work?

  • The light penetrates deep into the skin and tissues and stimulates the mitochondria, which increases the production of ATP (energy) and improves cellular function.
  • It accelerates cellular renewal, reduces inflammation, improves cognitive function and promotes wound healing.
  • It helps with muscle and joint pain, improves skin conditions (acne, scars), and supports hormonal balance and sleep.
  • It does not significantly heat the body, making it suitable for those who cannot tolerate heat.

Jasmina Kandorfer described red light therapy in detail in her book Biohacking Health: The Matrix of Nature.

We have also spoken about this method many times on the show Klepet ob kavi, and red light therapy has been featured several times in respected newspapers and magazines. Many people say that photobiomodulation panels are one of their best investments in longevity and vitality — although the most common reason for buying a panel in Slovenia is more curative in nature: skin problems, reduced bone density, poorer bone mobility, muscle and joint pain, alopecia or hair loss, cellulite and fine lines.
